Exaggerated Delayed Hypersensitivity to Mosquito Bites in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

چکیده

I T IS THE PURPOSE of this report to describe the occurrence of unusual cutaneous hyper-reactivity phenomena in certain patients having chronic lymphocytic leukemia. These reactions are consistent with an exaggerated delayed hypersensitivity type of response to insect bites, inoculated mosquito antigen and to certain other delayed hypersensitivity antigens. The mosquito is an example of certain insects whose bites are capable of evoking both immediate and delayed hypersensitivity types of cutaneous response. 4 Exaggerated delayed response may occur after initial sensitization and it is occasionally seen in children, but repeated exposure to the antigen seems to moderate the response. Spontaneous development of exaggerated delayed hypersensitivity to the mosquito is exceedingly rare in individuals past middle age. However, out of 97 cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia that were seen between 1950 and 1963 at Strong Memorial Hospital, there were 8 individuals who were found to have severe troublesome local reactions to insect bites, usually mosquito. Such reactions display features consistent both with delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity and with leukemia cutis. The enhanced delayed hypersensitivity has led to further evaluation of the immunologic competency of these individuals.

Exaggerated insect bite-like reaction in patients affected by oncohaematological diseases.

Sir, Patients affected by chronic B-cell lymphatic leukaemia (CBLL) and, more rarely, other oncohaematological diseases may present with papules, plaques, nodules and vesico-bullous lesions on exposed areas (1–3). These lesions are usually considered an exaggerated reaction to insect bites, although the patients not always had a history (except for the seasonal presentation of cutaneous finding...

A Case of Hypersensitivity to Mosquito Bite Associated with Epstein-Barr Viral Infection and Natural Killer Cell Lymphocytosis

Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (HMB) is a disorder characterized by a necrotic skin reaction and generalized symptoms subsequent to mosquito bites. It has been suggested that HMB is associated with chronic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and natural killer cell leukemia/lymphoma. We describe here a Korean child who had HMB associated with chronic EBV infection and natural killer cell lym...

Hypersensitivity Reaction to a Mosquito Bite in a Patient with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

A twenty-one-year-old male patient with an exaggerated hypersensitivity reaction to a mosquito bite presented to the department of emergency medicine for further evaluation. He was noted on physical examination to have splenomegaly. The hematological blood tests that were performed were compatible with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). In this case, the mosquito bite heralded the diagnosis of CML.

Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase-Positive Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma Arising in a Patient with Hypersensitivity to Mosquito Bites

Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites is defined as the appearance of intense skin reactive lesions and systemic symptoms subsequent to mosquito bites. Most cases of hypersensitivity to mosquito bites reported thus far have been associated with chronic Epstein-Barr virus infection or natural killer cell leukemia/lymphoma. In this study, we describe the case of an 18-year-old Korean boy who had hyp...

A Case of Hypersensitivity to Mosquito Bites without Peripheral Natural Killer Cell Lymphocytosis in a 6-Year-Old Korean Boy

Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (HMB) is a rare disease characterized by intense skin reactions such as bulla and necrotic ulcerations at bite sites, accompanied by general symptoms such as high-grade fever and malaise occurred after mosquito bites. It has been suggested that HMB is associated with chronic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and natural killer (NK) cell leukemia/lymphoma. We ...
